Bags of Opportunity

This morning it became evident that following my exercise schedule was not going to happen this week. My alarm went off at 5am and I had only slept another 5 hours again. With a long day ahead of me and another night of guests, getting up to go for a walk did not seem realistic. I was really disappointed that I couldn’t follow an exercise schedule since it's the first full week, but I had to remind myself that it is a unique situation. It’s not every day that my sister goes to a country 7,000 miles away.

On that note, tonight Katie (my sister) dragged out her suitcases from storage. They were FULL of dust and smelled like it came from a musty basement. Rupert didn’t care. He jumped right in and sat inside like it was his own little cave. Then awhile later Katie’s cat Nala jumped in. I wonder if on some level she realizes her mum is leaving. Occasionally we go away on weekend trips. When we lug out the small travel bags, they give us a forlorn look. That long sad stare, pleading to us to stay with them, even if it’s for a little bit longer, it just breaks our hearts to walk out that door. I suppose if they were like dogs and enjoyed leaving the comforts of home, we would bring them everywhere.

Soon enough, Nala will be waiting by the door. She will be looking around the apartment for Katie, especially at the time of day she normally would be getting home. Luckily she has Rupert and me to keep her company.

After work I came home and they greeted me at the door and followed me around as I picked up the house in preparation for tonight’s guests. My dad and new stepmother, Gayle stopped by to see Katie before her trip. They brought the wedding pictures. We reminisced about that night. We talked about things I could remember and couldn’t remember. I think I enjoyed my new vodka drink too much. : )

Talk then turned to previous conversations about my interests in becoming a chef. After a lot of soul searching I realized recently that being a chef was not something I was meant to do professionally. I really love to cook and doing that for myself and family is enough for me. I’m beginning to think that there are no definite or absolute career paths. Life takes us in so many directions that it is hard to definitively say what you will be. Most people have multiple careers in their lifetime. The trick is finding something you are willing to do for 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. I’ll let you in on a little secret though. I am looking into career opportunities in nutrition. Einstein is quoted as saying, “the important thing is not to stop questioning.”

One should always continue to explore life’s possibilities. And with that I bid you adieu. Ta Ta for now.

    1. You're welcome! I love Whole Foods because they sell what is fresh and in season. They also have "hard to find" or "never seen before" produce. Almost time for some good 'ol corn on the cob. I'm going to put the fresh, in season corn in my chili recipe when it gets cooler out. Almost time to dig out those boots! xoxo
