Mr. Coffee Bids You Farewell

I was jolted out of bed this morning by the sound of the apartment buzzer for the door. It took a millisecond to realize who it was and that I needed to answer it as soon as possible. My adrenaline started pumping through my body. I grabbed my glasses and “stranger” appropriate clothes, then ran out the door. In the lobby was the FedEx guy and in his hands was an envelope with Katie’s visa. This small package was the key for her whole trip. When I got back into the apartment I could not resist taking a picture of this momentous occasion and sending it to her via text.

Don’t mind my “morning hair.”

Last night I came home to find that my coffeemaker had died. I don’t know the exact time of death, but lights had gone out with no hope of them coming back on.

Luckily my brother bought my sister a “Clever Coffee Dripper” a few years ago, which is like a French press but easier to clean. The coffee came out smooth and creamy. I don’t know what I would have done without my morning cup of coffee.

Katie came home from her hair appointment and we enjoyed breakfast together and watched an episode of Sex and the City. By the time we finished, my mum had come over for the final prep. She was in charge of buttons and zippers. Check out the folding job only a mum could do.

Rupert took a nap in his favorite spot…Katie’s shoe bin in her closet.

I ran to Whole Foods for the weekly groceries and to grab fresh produce for dinner. Katie requested chicken salad because it would be light on her stomach the night before the big travel day. I bought a yellow pepper for my protein and I found fresh, organic chives which I could not resist. It’s one of Katie’s favorite herbs. I have plans for the rest of the chives later in the week.

When I got back home I found my brother had made it to my apartment. I unloaded all my goodies from the market and toasted some bread for a quick lunch. I needed something filling that I could just throw in my mouth because there was so much going on. Since Katie had not finished her errands, we all jumped in the car and headed out. I was happy that we were going to our favorite plaza in Plaistow, NH because I knew I could find a new coffeemaker. Bed, Bath, and Beyond did not have much of a selection and they were out of a lot of their stock. So we ran over to the other side of the plaza to Walmart and found the cutest coffeemaker in red! It got the Katie approval, so I grabbed it off the shelf. I like that this one also allows you to select the brew strength, even though I always select “strong.”

When we got home, I went right to cooking dinner. I threw the organic chicken in the pan and seasoned it with salt, pepper, and oregano (an herb that Katie requested). While it cooked, I washed all the veggies in a water bath with veggie cleaner. My mum helped with the chopping, especially the avocado because I’m not liking avocado right now so I was glad she handled that part. She also made the table look all pretty and kept the cats from jumping up on it.

After dinner I brought out the Green & Black brand chocolate for dessert. I picked out the toffee and almond kind, both were really good! I made some African blend coffee in my new coffeemaker which was a really lovely way to end the evening together. The coffeemaker did a good job brewing a strong cup. I found the African blend at Whole Foods and was intrigued when I read the label on the bin it was in. The smell was divine, so I ground it up in their grinder. The whole car smelled like coffee all the way from the market. I love when that happens.

No AC needed tonight. After I realized how cool it was, I opened up all the windows and the patio door. Opening that door always feels like a treat for Rupert and Nala.

Off to bed, my wake-up call is in a few hours. We’re meeting up with my dad on Rt 1 and he’s going to drive us into Logan Airport.
